DENTAL INSURANCE COMPANY

TYPE: Corporate
ROLE: Interior Designer at Huntsman Architectural Group
SOFTWARE: Revit, Photoshop, InDesign, Enscape
DURATION:
2017 - 2021
This project spanned over multiple years, floors, and locations. Our team created cohesive color palettes, finish schemes, and architectural designs that related to each other but also had their own, distinct identity.

TEST FITS AND PROGRAMMING

In order to understand how much square footage was required for each location, we created a series of fit plans to determine if our client's program would fit into the suites they were considering renting. We worked closely with them to understand the needs of their faculty, their business goals, and vision for future growth.

INSPIRATION

We were inspired by the Bay Area's surroundings and were very drawn to the idea of color blocking spaces and integrating more natural and light materials into the design to allow people to feel more connected with nature while they are spending time indoors. We worked closely with our stakeholders to ensure that we were in line with their new brand identity.

FINISH PLAN

We divided the space into two zones: the community room and the fitness center. We put a lot of thought into the functionality, conducted interviews with the building owners and brokers to gain a clearer insight to the needs of their tenants and started developing a program.
The building in Oakland had a greener surrounding. We integrated green color blocking into our meeting spaces and phone rooms.
The building in San Francisco had views to the water. We integrated blue color blocking into our meeting spaces and phone rooms. The collaboration rooms stayed green to connect it back over the bridge to their Oakland office.

BRANDING WALLS

We also worked with environmental graphic designers to develop branding walls. We worked with our clients to develop keywords that related to their company mission and promoted their values.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS AND DETAILS

I worked closely with our project architect, project manager, and coordinated with other designers to ensure that everything was captured correctly. We developed multiple permits for the two locations. Due to the complexity of the scope and design (creating openings for new internal stairs, stair documentation, and horizontal exiting requirements) these projects took a village. It was tough but so rewarding.

CHALLENGES / LESSONS LEARNED

The biggest challenge for these projects were the many moving pieces. There were so many consultants, engineers, and contractors to coordinate with. Everyone's timelines needed to be clear and understood to ensure milestones were met on time. We had two stellar project managers on our team, I learned a lot from them about managing client expectations, pushing back on consultants (in a nice but firm manner), and keeping our internal team within the established timeline and budget.

Team dynamics were also sometimes a challenge. Because these projects took years to complete, we cycled through team members. I needed to be able to adapt to different personalities quickly and learned how to navigate situations where miscommunications occured due to inefficient onboarding. I grew so much as a designer and person with these projects!
