OFFICE PENTHOUSE

TYPE: Corporate - Spec Suite
ROLE: Interior Designer at Huntsman Architectural Group
SOFTWARE: Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign
DURATION:
2019 - 2020
This project redefined the meaning of a spec suite for me. The building owners wanted to utilize prime real estate on the top floor. Prior to this build-out, the space was used as a mechanical floor, storage space, and a small break room for the building engineer.

INSPIRATION

The concept for the building was luxury boutique hotel in the Bay. The spec suite finishes throughout verberated this sentiment. The idea for the top floor was to elevate these finishes a bit further but still maintain the overall aesthetic of the other floors.

SPACE PLAN

I helped put together the space plan for this floor and worked with the lead designer to determine where potential catwalks needed to be added in the ceiling. The existing mechanical units wound up being moved to the roof.

MASSING STUDIES

In an effort to make the space feel more intimate and human, we came up with the concept of a 9'-0" H "horizon" line along the walls. This helped ground the space. We were also very focused on making all built-in elements accessible and inclusive for all types of users. We conducted many studies of the island design to ensure that all types of people would be able to use it with ease.

BUILDING STANDARD ISLAND DESIGN

I was given the task to design the break area island for the building. I worked closely with the lead designer to ensure that I was designing something that aligned with her vision. This was a great activity! She gave me the freedom to explore designs, with frequent and clear communication, it was easy to understand what her expectations were regarding the functionality.

FINAL PHOTOS

Unfortunately, I was scheduled to work on another project before we dove into construction documents. I was able to visit the space in person and see the impact of some of the early design decisions that I was involved with!

CHALLENGES / LESSONS LEARNED

Sometimes other projects pop up and you need to reshuffle. It's important to be able to fly with the punches, adapt, and cheer your old team on from the sidelines! They crushed it and I'm proud to have played a (small) part in the transformation. I was moved onto the lobby team for this building - which was also a stellar experience!
